THREE STAGES OF THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY (PART ONE)

An End! The Babylonian Captivity

(Part One: Focus On First & Second Stages)

Eze 7:2 “And you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD to the land of Israel: 'An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.

Eze 7:3 Now the end has come upon you, And I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways, And I will repay you for all your abominations.

What “End”?

THE 70 YEARS BABYLONIA CAPTIVITY – THREE STAGES:

§  605 B.C. First Stage: ELIAKIM (JEHOIAKIM) – made king by Pharaoh Necho (Egypt) -- became Nebuchadnezzar’s servant for three years then rebelled -- Daniel and friends taken.  *Ezekiel 18 yrs. old *Pharaoh Necho was defeated by Babylon in 4th yr. Jehoiakim.

§  597 B.C.  Second Stage: JEHOIACHIN (*JECONIAH, CONIAH) – son of Eliakim - Ezekiel and 10,000 captives taken.

§  586 B.C. Third Stage: ZEDEKIAH (MATTANIAH) – Destruction of Jerusalem, Temple destroyed.

Notes:

The Divided Kingdom (931 B.C.).

1) The Northern Kingdom (10 Tribes) God gave to Jeroboam (Capital Samaria) was taken captive by King Shalmaneser V of Assyria in 722 B.C. * Lasted 209 years).

2)  The Southern Kingdom left to Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, (Benjamin and Judah, capital Jerusalem) would last about 117 years until it is taken captive by Babylon.

Ezekiel (593-559 B.C.)

*BIG JUMP IN TIME: WHAT WOULD DANIEL PRAY AND CONFESS IN THE FIRST YEAR OF DARIUS?

WHAT DANIEL PRAYED AND CONFESSED

IN THE FIRST YEAR OF DARIUS THE MEDE (539-525 B.C.)

THE OATH HAS BEEN CONFIRMED

• Dan 9:9 To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him.

• Dan 9:10 We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.

Dan 9:11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.

Dan 9:12 And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.

THE CURSE AND OATH WRITTEN BY MOSES

*Moses, the Wilderness and the Law (Ca. 1445-1405 B.C.)

• The Curse Written in the Law:

* The culmination is written in Lev. 26:27-33.

The Oath Written in the Law: De. 4:25-28; in De. 30:18 it is stated with the curses (De. 27-30).

• Deu 4:25 “When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of the LORD your God to provoke Him to anger,

Deu 4:26  I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess; you will not prolong your days in it, but will be utterly destroyed.

• Deu 4:27 And the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will drive you.

• Deu 4:28 And there you will serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

HOW MANY YEARS?

• Moses, the Wilderness and the Law (Ca. 1445-1405 B.C.) *THEY CARRIED THEIR IDOLS WITH THEM (AMOS 5:25-27).

• The Northern Kingdom (10 Tribes) God gave to Jeroboam (Capital Samaria) was taken captive by King Shalmaneser V of Assyria in 722 B.C. * Lasted 209 years).

• The Southern Kingdom and the Destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.

1405-586 = 819 YEARS

*SEE THE TRUTH IN THESE STATEMENTS:

• Deu 9:6 Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

• Deu 9:7 "Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

• Deu 9:24 You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

THE BOOK OF THE LAW IS FOUND IN THE TEMPLE CLEANSING (2 KI 22)

ü King Josiah (640 B.C.) is read the “book of the Law” found in the rubbish of

the Temple it was being restored and cleansed of the idols put in it by Manasseh (697 B.C.). *Hilkiah the high priest found the book of the Law and gave it to Shaphan the scribe who read it to the King.

• 2Ki 22:8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

• 2Ki 22:10 Then Shaphan the scribe showed the king, saying, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read it before the king.

• 2Ki 22:11 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.

THE POINT OF NO RETURN

2Ki 22:14  So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. (She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her.

• 2Ki 22:15 Then she said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Tell the man who sent you to Me,

• 2Ki 22:16 “Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants—all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read—

• 2Ki 22:17 because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused against this place and shall not be quenched.' " '

THE POINT OF NO RETURN CONT’D.

EVEN AFTER ALL THE REFORM OF JOSIAH:

2Ki 23:25 Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.

• 2Ki 23:26 Nevertheless the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, with which His anger was aroused against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.

2Ki 23:27  And the LORD said, "I will also remove Judah from My sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, 'My name shall be there.' "

·     They Would Not Listen, 2 Ch 33:10 “And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they would not listen.”

GOD’S JUDGMENT BEGINS

ü KING JOSIAH TRIES TO STOP PHARAOH NECHO KING OF EGYPT GOING TO AID THE KING OF ASSYRIA AND IS KILLED BY PHARAOH NECHO.

2Ki 23:29  In his days Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went to the aid of the king of Assyria, to the River Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him. And Pharaoh Necho killed him at Megiddo when he confronted him.

• 2Ki 23:30 Then his servants moved his body in a chariot from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in his father's place.

ü JEHOAHAZ (JOAHAZ, SHALLUM) (609 B.C.) JOSIAH’S SON *REIGNED 3 MONTH.

• 2Ki 23:31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. …

2Ki 23:33  Now Pharaoh Necho put him in prison at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.  Died there 2Ki 23:34

ISRAEL’S AND JUDAH’S LUSTS FOR IDOLATRIES

WHY ISRAEL AND JUDAH PROVOKED GOD TO ANGER

BRIEF EXCERPT:

  Jer 32:29  And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger;

• Jer 32:30 because the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done only evil before Me from their youth. For the children of Israel have provoked Me only to anger with the work of their hands,' says the LORD.

Jer 32:31  'For this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My fury from the day that they built it, even to this day; so I will remove it from before My face

Jer 32:32  because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke Me to anger—they, their kings, their princes, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

TAUGHT AND HAVE NOT LISTENED TO RECEIVE INSTRUCTION

• Jer 32:33 And they have turned to Me the back, and not the face; though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction. ß Pr. 19:27

• Jer 32:34 But they set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

Jer 32:35  And they built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.'

Notes: Pro 19:27 Cease listening to instruction, my son, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

FIRST STAGE (609-597 B.C.)

MESSAGE TO JEHOIAKIM (ELIAKIM) The Son of Josiah

THE KINGS HOUSE:

• Jer 22:13 “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor's service without wages And gives him nothing for his work,

• Jer 22:14 Who says, 'I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.'

• Jer 22:15 “Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him.

• Jer 22:16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?" says the LORD.

• Jer 22:17 “Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence."  Duty of the king to have own copy of the Law (De. 17:18-20).

FIRST STAGE (609-597 B.C.)  JEHOIAKIM’S (ELIAKIM) – Death Foretold

• Jer 22:18 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: "They shall not lament for him, Saying, 'Alas, my brother!' or 'Alas, my sister!' They shall not lament for him, Saying, 'Alas, master!' or 'Alas, his glory!'

• Jer 22:19 He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

2Ch 36:5 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.

2Ch 36:6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in bronze fetters to carry him off to Babylon.  He was killed before he left!

• 2Ch 36:7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried off some of the articles from the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.

2Ch 36:8  Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations which he did, and what was found against him, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. Then Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.

FIRST STAGE (609-597 B.C.) Days of Jehoiakim…

THE RECHABITES ARE AN EXAMPLE OF “LISTENING”

Jer. 35 - They Came To Jerusalem for Safety

They refused Jeremiah’s “test” to drink wine for they had obeyed their father Jonadab who commanded they would not drink wine forever, nor sow seed or plant a vineyard or own one, nor build a house but dwell in tents that they might live many days in the land.

• Jer 35:18 And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: 'Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you,

• Jer 35:19 therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever."

Notes: Rewarded for doing what Judah did not do --- they listened. They were a rebuke to Judah who did not “listen” to God.  *The rewards the righteous receive before those in the church today who do not listen are a rebuke for their not listening.

FIRST STAGE (609-597 B.C.) Reign of Jehoiakim,

JEREMIAH’S SCROLL CONTAINED ALL THE WORDS SPOKEN SINCE THE DAYS OF JOSIAH.

Jeremiah 36

Jer 36:1  Now it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying:

Jer 36:2 “Take a scroll of a book and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.

Jer 36:3  It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the adversities which I purpose to bring upon them, that everyone may turn from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.“

• Jer 36:10 Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the LORD's house, in the hearing of all the people.

FIRST STAGE (609-597) JEHOAKIM CUT UP GOD’S WORD AND THREW IT INTO THE FIRE – NO FEAR OF GOD’S WARNINGS!

• Jer 36:21 So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll, and he took it from Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king.

• Jer 36:22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with a fire burning on the hearth before him.

Jer 36:23  And it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that the king cut it with the scribe's knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.  Can’t get away from God’s Word by destroying it or avoiding it! Didn’t wait to hear all God had to say! Acts 20:27. *Church members get ½ through a sermon and walk out!

• Jer 36:24 Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words. (Cf. Heb.10:29-31, 12:25-29)

• Jer 36:25 Nevertheless Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah implored the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them. (Cf. Ja. 1:19-20)

Jer 36:26  And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the LORD hid them.

Notes: Pro 19:27 Cease listening to instruction, my son, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

FIRST STAGE (609-597) ANOTHER SCROLL FORETELLS JEHOIAKIM’S DEATH

Jer 36:28 “Take yet another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.

• Jer 36:29 And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, 'Thus says the LORD: "You have burned this scroll, saying, 'Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and cause man and beast to cease from here?' "

• Jer 36:30 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: "He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.

Jer 36:31  I will punish him, his family, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah all the doom that I have pronounced against them; but they did not heed." ‘“   ß Pr. 19:27.

• Jer 36:32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the instruction of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And besides, there were added to them many similar words.

SECOND STAGE:  JEHOIACHIN – JERUSALEM CAPTURED 597 B.C.

ü SECOND STAGE: (597 B.C.) JEHOIACHIN *JECONIAH OR CONIAH, Son of Jehoiakim.

JEHOIACHIN REIGNS IN JUDAH

• 2Ki 24:8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother's name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.

• 2Ki 24:9 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done.

• 2Ki 24:10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.

• 2Ki 24:11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, as his servants were besieging it.

2Ki 24:12  Then Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his princes, and his officers went out to the king of Babylon; and the king of Babylon, in the eighth year of his reign, took him prisoner.

SECOND STAGE: JEHOIACHIN – None Remained Except the Poorest

NEBUCHADNEZZAR BROUGHT HIM TO BABYLON WITH VALUABLE ARTICLES FROM THE TEMPLE AND MADE ZEDEKIAH KING.  *EZEKIEL AND 10,000 CAPTIVES

• 2Ki 24:14 Also he carried into captivity all Jerusalem: all the captains and all the mighty men of valor, ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained except the poorest people of the land.

• 2Ki 24:15 And he carried Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. The king's mother, the king's wives, his officers, and the mighty of the land he carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.

2Ki 24:16  All the valiant men, seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths, one thousand, all who were strong and fit for war, these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

2Ki 24:17  Then the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

• Released from prison in 37th year of exile by Evil-merodach of Babylon (562-560 B.C.) and treated kindly until death, 2 Kings 25:27-30.

CONCLUSION: These Penalties For Not Listening Speak Volumes!

Notes: Pro 19:27 Cease listening to instruction, my son, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

1. How many years for the nation? 1405-586 = 819 YEARS (from the wilderness to the complete destruction).

2. How many years for a lifetime?

Hearing and Doing the Word

Jas 1:19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

Jas 1:20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Jas 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Jas 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
