Notes On Belief in Jesus as the Son of God

When interested, individuals being studied with will have many questions. I always try to get in the initial steps of obedience from the first – I tell them we’ll go into detail in following lessons. In one study I explained that belief in the deity of Christ as the Son of God is an essential step to becoming a Christian. He said he'd always believed He is God’s Son. There seemed to be something in his expression, so I thought it very important to explain Jesus Christ as the Son of God in more detail. Here is the substance of that lesson.

THE COMMISSION GIVEN TO THE APOSTLES:

Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

STEPS OF OBEDIENCE THAT PUTS ONE “IN CHRIST”:

•Hears the Gospel (Mk 16:15-16 “go…preach”).

•Believes in the deity of Christ (Mk 16:16; Jo. 3:16; Rom 10:17).

•Repents (Acts 2:38).

•Confesses Christ with the mouth (Rom 10:9-10; Acts 8:37).

•Baptized into Christ (Mk 16:15-16; Gal 3:26-27, “all” thus no exceptions).

•Then, rises to walk in newness of life (Rom 6:4; 2 Cor 5:17).

AN IMPORTANT FOUNDATION: GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION THROUGH CHRIST IS FROM ETERNITY BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN.

•Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

•Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: > “before the foundation of the world”

•Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. > “before ordained” [G4282] Thayer’s: 1) to prepare before, to make ready beforehand.

•1Pe 1:20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you   > “foreordained” G4267 “foreknown” – God's foreknowledge and decree is the cause for Christ shedding His blood as a sacrifice for sin (I Pet 1:17-19).

•1Pe 1:21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON.

•Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

•Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

GOD SENT HIS SON INTO THE WORLD.

•Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

•Joh 5:30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

What is the will of the Father who sent Him?

Joh 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

Joh 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Joh 6:39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

Joh 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN.

•Joh 20:30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;

•Joh 20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

How important is it that he believes the scriptures are not man’s own product, but inspired by the Holy Spirit who is One of the godhead? (Eph 3:1-4; 2Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:20-21)

•Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

•Eternal life comes through believing the scriptures and obeying (Matt 7:21-23; Mk 16:15-16).

THE VIRGIN BIRTH.

Mat 1:20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

Mat 1:22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:

Mat 1:23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD, AND BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which is translated, "God with us. “

Mat 1:24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,

Mat 1:25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

> JESUS [G2424] Thayer Definition: Jesus = “Jehovah is salvation” 1) Jesus, the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, God incarnate.

Question: So, what are you believing?

THE VIRGIN BIRTH.

Luk 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.

Luk 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

Luk 1:33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

Luk 1:34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"

Luk 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.  > “therefore” [G1352] Thayer: 1) wherefore, on account off.

Question: So, what are you believing?

THE HOLY SPIRIT PREPARED A BODY FOR THE ETERNAL SPIRIT OF CHRIST (GOD) TO ENTER.

Heb 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Heb 10:5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU DID NOT DESIRE, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME.

Heb 10:6 IN BURNT OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES FOR SIN YOU HAD NO PLEASURE.

Heb 10:7 THEN I SAID, 'BEHOLD, I HAVE COME—IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME—TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.' "

Heb 10:8 Previously saying, "SACRIFICE AND OFFERING, BURNT OFFERINGS, AND OFFERINGS FOR SIN YOU DID NOT DESIRE, NOR HAD PLEASURE IN THEM" (which are offered according to the law),

Heb 10:9 then He said, "BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD." He takes away the first that He may establish the second.

Heb 10:10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

ONE BELIEVES GOD CAME FROM HEAVEN INTO THE WORLD.

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Joh 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Note: God is eternal, immortal, Spirit (Jo 4:24; Rom 1:20; I Tim 1:17).

GOD WAS MANIFESTED IN THE FLESH.

1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

> “without controversy” [G3672] Thayer Definition: 1) by consent of all, confessedly, without controversy.

Question: So, what are you believing?

JESUS IS THE CHRIST (THE MESSIAH)

Joh 20:30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;

Joh 20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

•Joh 1:40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

•Joh 1:41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ).

•Mat 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: …

•Mat 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

THE PEOPLE REFERRED TO THE CHRIST AS THE “SON OF DAVID”

They understood the Christ would be descended from the line of David.

Luk 2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,

To the shepherds:

Luk 2:11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Matt 2:5-6 is according to the prophecy he would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

JESUS MADE IT SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND CHRIST IS LORD BY ASKING, “WHOSE SON IS HE?” (USING PS. 110).

Here “Lord” means God.

•Mat 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

•Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

•Mat 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

•Mat 22:44 The LORD [G2962, God] said unto my Lord [G2962, God], Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

•Mat 22:45 If David then call him Lord [G2962, God], how is he his son?

•Mat 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS CHRIST’S KINGDOM.

Luk 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

Luk 1:33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Mat 16:17 Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Mat 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Mat 16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Mat 16:20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

THE REIGN OF CHRIST IS PROPHESIED IN PSALMS 2.

Christ [G5577] Thayer: Christ = “anointed” 1) Christ was the Messiah, the Son of God.

The Reign of God’s “Anointed” (Christ) is prophesied in Psalms 2, and quoted in Acts 4.

Psa 2:1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? > QUOTED IN ACTS 4:25-26.

Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, > QUOTED IN ACTS 4:25-26.

Psa 2:3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us."

Psa 2:4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.

Psa 2:5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:

Psa 2:6 “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion."

THE CHRIST WOULD SET ON THE “HEAVENLY” THRONE OF DAVID.

God’s Covenant with David was the promise of Christ, his descendant, seated upon His throne:

> Cf. Vss: Psa 89:3-4, 34-37; Psa132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

> Cf. Isa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

PETER PREACHED CHRIST AS KING SEATED ON DAVID’S THRONE IN HEAVEN (ACTS 2)

Act 2:29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

Act 2:30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

Act 2:31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.  (Acts 2:25-28)

Act 2:32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

Act 2:33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Act 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

Act 2:35 TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL." '

Act 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." > B.L. Matt 28:18-20 “all authority.”

ONE BELIEVES IN THE RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION OF CHRIST.

Luk 23:44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

Luk 23:45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

Luk 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, 'INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.' Having said this, He breathed His last.

Act 2:32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

Act 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

Act 2:35 TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL." '

Note: God is eternal, immortal, Spirit (Jo 4:24; Rom 1:20; I Tim 1:17).

DECLARED TO BE THE SON OF GOD BY THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD.

Rom 1:1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God

Rom 1:2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

Rom 1:3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

Rom 1:4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
